Relationship to SwissEx

Most of the eScience projects are strongly related to GRID technology like for example the Globus Toolkit. The toolkit provides an infrastructure to distribute and share data, computational resources as well as instruments. This kind of infrastructure is used for example in high energy physics, where in particular the sharing of computational resources has high priority.

In SwissEx the main focus is on sharing data as well as knowledge about the data to facilitate a integrated view on the environment. Therefore, an infrastructure like Globus Toolkit is not applicable since there is less support for data and knowledge sharing. However, there are quite some common issues:

• data provenance
  • identity of data
  • keeping track of changes of data and the associated knowledge
  • all kind of consistency problems of data and the associated knowledge
  • knowledge about data derived from raw sensor data
• knowledge representations
  • representation and sharing of explicated knowledge
  • sharing of knowledge in a community
• intellectual property rights
  • who owns the data and has the right to specify how the data can be distributed
  • specification of intellectual property rights on data and associated knowledge
• security
  • mechanisms to support the enforcement of intellectual property rights
  • access control of data and knowledge
  • guarantees that the data and knowledge has not been altered unauthorized
  • proof of origin: guarantee that the data and knowledge has been provided by a certain user
